Black Oak Therapy provides Speech, Language, Reading, and Feeding Therapy for ​families in El Dorado County

Our Speech-Language Pathologists use each child's own interests & strengths to engage them in targeting their therapy goals. Our therapy techniques are supported by research, yearly professional training/certifications, and clinical experience. 
Our boutique-style therapy is conducted in the environment that your child feels most comfortable: our office, your home, school, etc.

My name is Alex Stewart. I was born and raised in El Dorado County. Growing up in and around Placerville, I developed a love for where I live and the community of people who live here. I graduated from Sacramento State University where I received my Bachelor's of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology, followed by my Master's of Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology. During my career I have worked with children and adults across a variety of settings, including: schools, homes, outpatient clinics, a skilled nursing facility, and a hospitals in El Dorado and Sacramento County. I started Black Oak Therapy in 2017 to provide the best speech therapy services possible to those in my community.

My Experience and Approach

I have worked as an SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist) since 2013, but my experience working with children began long before that. While in school working towards my Bachelor's and Master's degrees, I tutored elementary school students in reading, mentored SLP undergraduate students, and performed therapy-based research as a part of the Language Laboratory at the UC Davis M.I.N.D. (Medical Investigation on Neurodevelopmental Disorders) Institute.

I have come to learn that communication and eating are two of the most vital functions of a humans life. When an issue arises in either of these areas, quality of life is impacted. My goal for therapy is to improve communication and eating skills to improve overall learning, socialization, and thriving. 

At Black Oak Therapy, therapy plans, goals and activities are individualized to each client's needs. I take the time to get to know each of my clients interests and strengths in order to incorporate this into their therapies. When clients understand and appreciate the goals, they are motivated which improves rate of progress and outcomes.
